Malaga Spain Holiday Travel

The perfect holiday can be found with the laziest of internet searches. More often than not, an online holiday search for an affordable, sunny, hassle-free holiday will result in a Spanish holiday, and more specifically, the Costa del Sol. For many Brits, the balmy climate, the siestas and the white-washed houses of the Mediterranean seem like a million miles away from the grey, rain-sodden, work obsessed British Isles; when in fact it is less than a three hour flight away. In fairness, a sunburnt, beer-bellied, shaven-headed northerner in his best union jack shorts downing pint after pint of watery lager at the behest of some equally sunburnt, cocktail-wielding party-girls can crop up in any resort across the world. Malaga, however, with its ancient historic sites, miles of sunny beaches and purpose built resorts has more than enough sangria to appease the sun worshippers, history buffs, culture junkies and teenage drinking champions alike.

Whether it’s a last minute decision, or a heavily prepared holiday, a trip to Malaga will no doubt mean you will be staying in the resorts of Torremolinos, Marbella, Estepona or Malaga, although there are smaller resorts such as Nerja and Playa de Casares. The Malaga region is in southern Spain and is surrounded by mountains which offer protection against cold weather from northern Europe and the Atlantic leaving it to bask in the sunny climes of southern Europe. All flights to the Costa del Sol land at the airport in the City of Malaga which is Spain’s third largest airport. The City of Malaga is in the centre of the Costa del Sol with Nerja to the east and the other resorts to the west, but all the resorts are within an hours drive from the airport.

Torremolinos is the nearest resort to the City of Malaga. Since the 1960s this town has been specifically developed as an epicentre for tourism with the mass building of hotels along the beachfront which inevitably led the way for an influx of apartments, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. This resort is perfect for couples, groups of friends and families alike; plenty of activities for adults and kids provided by the hotels, sports activities at the beach, scores of restaurants offering typical Spanish fare to fast food to fish & chips, and to finish the evenings there are a multitude of bars and pubs. No need to return to the hotel yet though, as once the sun goes down the clubs begin to open, and with a wide variety of music styles catered for you may find the sun rising again as you leave one of the many dance clubs, rock clubs or jazz clubs. If you need to clear your head the morning after, Torremolinos retains its heritage with The Old Town which offers a slower pace, quiet restaurants and cafes and a chance to experience the classic Spanish way of life.

Travel further east down the coast you will find yourself in the affluent resort of Marbella. Whether you are a rock star, film star or business tycoon, your bright yellow Ferrari and million pound yachts are always welcome in Marbella. Although the resort is an archetypal playground for the super rich, it is still a viable destination for any holiday maker. However, the likelihood of staying in one the ultra luxurious hotels on the Golden Mile and sharing your continental breakfast with Tom Cruise or an Arabian King is slim (though you may bump into them at one of the posh bars or down at the harbour). If you’re very lucky you may find that you have become a movie star yourself by wandering into one the many movies being filmed in Marbella. Along the coast from Marbella lies the town and resort of Estepona which ticks along at a more sedate pace than the other resorts making it a perfect location for holidaying families. Estepona is known predominantly for its 13 miles of white sandy beaches and beautiful turquoise watered shores. In amongst the traditional white-washed houses and hotels there is vast array of small yet excellent restaurants and shops offering visitors traditional fares and wares; a whole day can be spent lost amongst the winding cobbled streets picking up inexpensive bargains. However, if you require a touch more excitement there is a plethora of water sports available allowing you jet ski across the Mediterranean, discover the beauty beneath it in some scuba gear or paraglide above it with the help of a speedboat.

If you like to mix history with your holiday all the resorts have a least some remains harking back centuries to the Roman and Moor invasions. These ruins are often of defensive walls and castles designed to protect against attacks from the sea. Some of the best examples of these historical ruins and buildings can be found in the City of Malaga. The Giralfaro Fortress is a 14th century castle situated on a hill overlooking the sea and offering panoramic views of the city. Directly adjacent to this is La Alcazaba, a Moorish castle which along with fine examples of Moorish architecture and design has vivid and lush gardens, especially throughout the balmy summer. In the form of modern history, popular choices are the birthplace of Picasso and its related museum and the Plaza de la Malagueta; a hundred year old bull fighting ring with a capacity of 15000 spectators.

Malaga and the Costa del Sol truly have everything required for a perfect holiday, long or short, for the sun worshippers, shoppers, and explorers. The sunny weather and high temperatures during the summer months are as good as guaranteed; the beaches are kept immaculately clean and are patrolled by lifeguards, plenty of great bars and restaurants and a multitude of activities inside and outside of the resorts. So if you want to mix it up a bit consider Torremolinos, if you want to rub shoulders with celebrities book your place at Marbella, Estepona for shopping and relaxing with family, or fill your boots with history and culture at Malaga.
